Meet The Team: Matthew Buchanan
Each week we’ll introduce a member of the CDFL team, or as we like to think of ourselves, the “us” in the Power of Plus. This week we are proud to introduce architect Matthew Buchanan.
What would surprise us most about your job?
Probably one of the more surprising and fun aspects of my job is that I get to interact with sports figures such as players, coaches, athletic directors.
What do you do at CDFL?
I’m an architect specializing in sports facility design. I’ve also recently become an Associate of the firm.
What exciting thing are you working on right now?
Hinds Community College is planning a new softball Stadium, Mississippi College is looking to add to their football program, and St. Andrews Episcopal School is adding a new wellness and performance center to their upper school campus.
What is the best thing about working at CDFL?
I’ve always said it’s the people we work with here. We have a great staff with a tremendous knowledge base and lots of experience, along with fun-loving personalities.
What do you spend the most time doing outside of work?
I have a mid-century modern house that I am renovating to bring back to its former glory, while adding some 21st century updates. Building things with my hands and developing a skill in woodworking are passions of mine. I appreciate the way things are put together, the craft it takes, and the creative process. I also enjoy cooking and grilling, especially for others. I like trying new recipes.
What’s the last movie you saw?
American Hustle
How long have you worked for CDFL?
I have worked at CDFL for 13 years and been in the profession since graduating in 2001.
What is your favorite lunch spot in the neighborhood?
Working in Fondren, there are too many favorite places to list. Top three have to be, in no particular order, Babalu, Walkers, Pig and Pint, and Cafe Ole!. Wait that’s four…
What new thing is happening in your field?
In the sports world, especially within college athletics, it’s always an arms race to see who can build the next interesting and innovative thing. This is a constant – especially with television deals and revenue those contracts generate, everyone is looking to upgrade. Two things stand out, though: recruiting and fan experience. New training facilities help in recruiting young talent and new performance venues make a fan’s experience even better.
What’s your favorite TV show?
I’m not a big TV watcher, but I would have to say Mad Men for drama. Recently, my financee has got me into watching Food Network.
