University of Mississippi Medical Center, Interprofessional Simulation Center
Two of five floors in the new School of Medicine building at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) are the hub for simulation-based learning. This new, 63,500-square foot center serves the medical center’s healthcare providers and students as well as outside groups, such as the Army National Guard.
Previously each of these simulation-based focus groups were located on campus and throughout the community. Centralizing these groups’ efforts and facilitating interdisciplinary involvement became a priority during the planning of the new School of Medicine.
As part of planning process CDFL worked to create a fully functioning mock-up of the new center’s high fidelity laboratory layout within the existing space. The mock-up utilizes demountable partitions and donated equipment, and will serve as a usable high fidelity lab while the new School of Medicine building is under construction.
The six high fidelity simulation lab modules supporst team-based learning, as well as train practitioners and students on a variety of situations. These situations range from addressing a complete power failure during a complex surgery, to triaging a multipatient emergency, to practicing basic bedside skills in a pediatric hospital. These highly flexible spaces incorporate panelized wall systems and hidden wire raceways to make the incorporation of new healthcare environment technologies easier.
