University of Mississippi Medical Center Children’s Hospital Master Plan
Feeling the constraints of their existing pediatric facilities, the University of Mississippi Medical Center called upon CDFL and Atlanta-based medical planning consultants Kurt Salmon to develop a new facility and master plan for Children’s Hospital. As a result of the master planning sessions, UMMC established five strategies to advance Children’s Hospital’s role within its multi-state region:
• Establish long-term vision for Children’s Hospital and the growth of its inpatient and outpatient programs
• Confirm clinical programmatic focus, emphasis, and growth of the correlated clinical spaces
• Establish a Master Plan for facilities renovations and expansions of all pediatric space in support of the Campus Master Plan
• Develop an expansion strategy for phased development process
• Reset the physical presence and patient experience of Children’s Hospital on campus
The master plan confirmed the facility’s need for an additional 450,000 square feet. In addition to the expansion, it was determined that the hospital was in need of a new surgical platform, inpatient beds, specialized PICUs, dedicated radiology unit, and related support spaces. Additionally, a new entry podium and bed tower were envisioned in order to receive patients and their families.
