The Mississippi Museums

Comprised of a state history museum and civil rights museum, the Two Mississippi Museums project is the most recent addition to Jackson’s Capitol Complex. The Museum of Mississippi History, which replaces and expands a museum damaged in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina,  explores a sweep of the state’s history from its earliest times to the present. The adjacent Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, the nation’s first state-operated civil rights museum, examines the struggle for civil rights and equality that changed the course of the state and the nation.

The two Museums, which share public spaces and classrooms, opened in December 2017 as the centerpiece of the state’s bicentennial celebration. In addition to providing a home for thousands of artifacts, the museums showcase the heroic stories of Mississippians—both the famous and the unsung.

CDFL’s involvement in the Mississippi Museums mainly took part during Phase 2 – Tenant Improvement – the interior build out of the facility. During the TI phase, CDFL took the reins as project manager, and coordinated the efforts of consulting engineers and exhibit designers.

The Museums were the last component of the Capitol Complex, a joint venture that includes Jackson firms Eley Guild Hardy and Dale Partners.
