Young Architects Forum Mississippi

CDFL’s Newell Watkins is Mississippi’s acting statewide YAF liaison. Today he writes about what exactly YAF is, when it’s coming, and what to expect once it’s here.

What is YAF

Young Architects Forum (YAF) was organized to address issues of particular importance to recently
licensed architects (within 10 years or fewer after licensure) and young designers and interns. YAF is open to all recently graduated architecture students, designers, interns, young architects and those who wish to mentor that population. YAF Mississippi is the local component of the AIA National YAF component.

Throughout its history, the YAF has had three goals:

1. To encourage professional growth and leadership development among recently licensed architects through interaction and collaboration within the AIA and allied groups.

2. To build a national network and serve as a collective voice for young architects by working to ensure that issues of particular relevance to young architects are appropriately addressed by the Institute.

3. To make AIA membership valuable to young architects and to develop the future leadership of the profession.

What We Do

YAF MS will begin hosting monthly events in 2014. Our calendar will include competitions, lectures, office tours, service projects, and social events.

How to Join

Membership in YAF MS is free and open to all young designers, architects and interns throughout the state. Although membership in the AIA is not necessary to participate in our programs or to join YAF MS, we encourage you to get involved in what the AIA is doing and take advantage of the full range of resources provided to the profession.

How to Get Involved

With YAF MS in its infancy, there are many opportunities for leadership within our Steering Committee. YAF MS is an organization meant to serve its constituents and we are open to ideas for events, competitions, collaborations, or anything else we feel with resonate with Mississippi’s young architects.
