Senior Associate Parker Reece Participates in Mississippi State University College of Architecture Panel
Salmon Architects’ Amelia Salmon invited Senior Associate and mechanical engineer Parker Reece, along with electrical engineer Chris Green of The Power Source, to participate in a panel discussion for students in Mississippi State’s College of Architecture 5th Year Program.
The 5th Year Program takes place in Jackson and this year’s class is comprised of 31 students. The topic of discussion for the panel was the collaboration between architects and engineers within the building construction industry as part of the practice of both professions. In addition to sharing lessons learned, the dialogue addressed many topics, including: the importance of both written and verbal communication, how integrated architecture and engineering firms are different, BIM, project coordination, handling construction administration, energy conservation, sustainable design, learning cost and schedule estimating skills, and learning good business management practices. The panel also spent time discussing “things we wish we had known more about when we started in this business,” and tried to provide students with concrete ways in which they can prepare themselves for a career in their chosen field.
CDFL wishes the students in this year’s program much success as they prepare to begin their careers.
