Randy J. Cleveland Engineering Student Center Renovation & Addition

The Randy J. Cleveland Engineering Student Center transforms the former Materials Testing Laboratory, originally built in 1906 and designated a Mississippi Landmark, into a dynamic new home for Mississippi State University’s engineering students. Funded through the generosity of Randy and Nina Cleveland, the project holds special significance for the couple, as the building is where they would meet while attending MSU.

CDFL led the full renovation of the historic 2,400 SF structure and designed a rear addition, creating a two-story, 7,870 SF facility that now serves as a hub for student engagement. The program includes offices, engineering labs, a maker space, technology-enabled classrooms and meeting rooms, and flexible collaboration areas.

Working closely with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH), the design emphasized preserving the building’s historic character while stabilizing and rehabilitating its original masonry walls. CDFL collaborated with MDAH to restore the historic windows and design the new front canopy, while also creating a new entry walk to complement the building’s architectural integrity. The renovation addressed challenges with uneven floor elevations and limited ceiling heights through selective demolition and strategic lighting to enhance spatial comfort.

The project introduced a new mezzanine, added elevators, and incorporated a golf cart garage to support campus tours. Extensive mechanical, electrical, and structural upgrades, including connection to the campus utility loop, enhanced humidity control, ADA compliance, and seamless integration of new and existing construction, ensure the facility’s long-term performance and adaptability.

Now complete, the Cleveland Engineering Student Center not only revitalizes a cherished historic structure but has also inspired two additional projects, further extending its impact on the MSU campus.
