Fort Bragg
The WT Barracks Complex provides a new home for the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Bragg. This complex serves as living quarters and workspace for wounded soldiers returning from war that are in need of rehabilitation. The complex contains Barracks, Company Headquarters, Brigade Headquarters, Dining Facility, Soldier Support Facility, and a Parking Structure. This campus is located in the center of Fort Bragg, next to the Womack Army Medical Center. The complex is completely ADA accessible and allows soldiers close proximity to rehabilitation and medical help. CDFL is responsible for design of the Site, Barracks, and Parking Structure for the complex.
The guiding design principle was to seamlessly incorporate the WT Complex in the architecture of the Old Post. Special consideration was given to the choice of interior finishes in order to create a tranquil environment that uses therapeutic textures and colors. The facility includes rehabilitation areas, basketball courts, and a Healing Garden for outdoor relaxation and meditation. The floor and site plans are arranged to encourage individuals to engage with each other as part of the healing process.
The 325-car parking deck is the first at Fort Bragg. Because of its proximity to the hospital’s helicopter landing pad, special provisions for were made – including a precast concrete structure. The lower level of the parking structure is located below ground. During construction of the retaining wall, ground water and extremely hard soil conditions were encountered, making construction and excavation challenging. The barracks’ and complex’s systems have been designed to minimize energy use and maintenance, including compact fluorescent lighting, water source heat pump, and high-efficiency boilers.
